Phone lines have been very good for tranferring audio but not ideal for transferring video. The Internet and its Internet Protocol technology allowed Video over IP (VoIP) as well as Voice over IP (VoIP). Because of the convenience and quality as well as the low costs of running a network, audio or VoIP is now commonly sent over the internet. Videoconferences can be sent over the internet as well.
