Meetings via the web, net meetings and web conferencing are terms that are used to convey the needs of Internet connected computer users who need to instantly relay messages, documents, files and information to people in other locations. At times, online meetings may be the best way to exchange and share vital details of a project or team meeting. Web sites and service providers are both promoting different easy-to-install software and tools to guide users through the maze of multi-point conferencing.
The multi-point control unit, known as the MCU, is used for linking various parties of the net meeting in a particular sequence for the conference call. The addition of video makes an appealing improvement; especially since ISDN or IP based-conferencing makes for fast and accurate display of images.
An MCU is characterized by the number of simultaneous calls it can handle, the capabilities to conduct various data rates and protocols as well as add-on features like Continuous Presence, which allows MCUs to display the presence of multiple parties onscreen simultaneously.
MCUs can be stand-alone hardware devices or the functionality can be embedded into dedicated Video Telecommunication Units (VTC).
