There have been many changes and technological breakthroughs guiding the development of video conferencing services, systems and equipment.
Videoconferencing started on ISDN networks and now can travel over the Internet (TCP/IP or just IP). The Multipoint Conferencing Units (MCUs) are devices that take care of the higher-end traffic flow in multi-point video conferences; these include gateway capabilities that bring together the participating sites in a videoconference equipment check mode.
