TANDBERG Expressway(TM) Becomes the Standard for NAT-Firewall Traversal Worldwide

ITU Approves Breakthrough Standard for Visual Communication on Any IP Network

New York, USA, and Oslo, Norway-- Sept. 13, 2005 -- In a landmark move to advance widespread adoption of video communication over the internet, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) today announced two new standards for Network Address Translation (NAT) – Firewall traversal: H.460.18 and H.460.19. These standards – based on the Expressway(TM) solution developed by TANDBERG, a global leader in visual communication – will provide video users with a method of NAT – Firewall traversal that opens the doors to video communication both within and outside virtually any organization, anywhere.

The ITU develops internationally accepted technical and operating standards to foster seamless interconnection of the world’s communication network. Together with other major industry vendors, TANDBERG developed the H.460.18 and H.460.19 standards for the ITU based on the components of its breakthrough Expressway TM solution.

When introduced in February, Expressway(TM) overcame the last remaining barrier to the widespread adoption of video communication over IP by providing a fast, secure and simple method of overcoming IP firewalls. Consequently, businesses can visually reach customers, suppliers and home office workers, making relationships stronger and enhancing productivity in a cost effective way.

“This technology has been an industry-wide catalyst for adoption of visual communication. Until the availability of Expressway, visual communications was largely within the enterprise. Now, visual communications easily and securely expands beyond the enterprise to customers and suppliers,” says Andrew Miller, TANDBERG chief executive officer. “Establishment of these standards signals the official beginning of a truly global video community.”

TANDBERG intends to make the intellectual property which forms the basis for both H.460.18 and H.460.19 technologies available to others on condition of reciprocity. As the first vendor in the industry, H.460.18- and H.460.19-enabled TANDBERG products are available immediately.

About the standards:

  • H.460.18 enables H.323 video endpoints to exchange signaling and establish connections, even if those signals are placed behind NAT – Firewall devices.
  • H.460.19 extends H.323 by defining the NAT – Firewall mechanism for media by working together with a signaling traversal mechanism, such as H.460.18.
